The model is a larger, more advanced successor to the slow selling Ora hatch with sharp driveaway pricing from $33,990 for the Lux variant and $36,990 for the Ultra.
Among many others, competitors include the BYD Atto2 (from $31,990), MG S5 (from $40,490), Chery E5 (from $36,990), and Leapmotor B10 (from $37,888).
Due in showrooms from June, the Ora 5 becomes a “key pillar” in GWM’s expanding electric vehicle strategy, vying for sales in the competitive Small SUV segment and signalling a broader rollout of new Ora-branded EVs through 2026-27.
It will be offered exclusively as a battery electric vehicle, powered by a front-mounted traction motor producing 150kW and 260Nm.
Electrons are supplied by a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a claimed WLTC driving range of up to 430km.
DC fast-charging capability of up to 120kW enables a 30-80 per cent recharge in around 20 minutes, while vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality provides up to 6kW of external power for accessories and equipment.
Underpinning the drivetrain is GWM’s “15-in-1” electric architecture, integrating multiple systems into a single unit to improve efficiency, response and energy management.
Compared to the outgoing Ora hatch, the new SUV adopts significantly larger dimensions, with increased length, wheelbase and ground clearance aimed at improving cabin space and road presence.
The model’s design evolves the brand’s retro-inspired styling with a more contemporary execution, featuring distinctive LED lighting signatures, aerodynamic detailing and a broader stance.
GWM says the new model maintains a strong focus on value, with pricing aligned closely to the outgoing hatch despite gains in size, technology, and range.
The entry-level Lux variant includes a comprehensive standard equipment list including a 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen powered by Coffee OS, 10.25-inch digital instrument display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports, synthetic leather seats, six-way electric driver’s seat and single-zone climate control with rear vents.
On the safety front, the entry model is equipped with seven airbags and a 360-degree camera system and ADAS systems including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, and blind-spot monitoring.
It rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels and has auto LED headlights and taillights.
The Ultra model adds an electric tailgate, panoramic glass roof with electric sunshade, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, 64-colour LED interior ambient lighting and upgraded audio.
GWM says with its aggressive pricing and expanded capability, the ORA 5 is positioned as a value-focused contender in Australia’s rapidly growing electric small SUV segment.
