The ‘S’ suffix has always indicated a particularly high-performance variant when added to the end of an Aston Martin model name, the Vanquish S that debuted in 2004 at the Paris Motor Show being the first, and the DBX S is no exception.
Under the hood, the AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 remains and is still bolted to a wet-clutch AMG nine-speed automatic, but the wick has been turned to eleven courtesy of turbo technology lifted from the incoming Valhalla supercar.
While the former top-dog DBX707 offered a stratospheric 520kW/900Nm, one-upping the original DBX’s 405kW/700Nm, the new model takes performance to another level entirely with its 535kW/900Nm outputs.
The DBX707 made a racquet, but its tone was more subdued than the power output suggested – at least we found that to be the case when testing it – however the DBX S scores a modified exhaust system that Aston Martin says amplifies the “natural voice of the thunderous V8”.
Aston Martin also reduced the weight of the DBX S, fitting it with a carbon fibre roof (which also lowers the centre of gravity) and offering optional magnesium wheels that reduce unsprung mass by a significant 19kg.
The steering ratio is also four per cent quicker, enhancing agility and apparently even reducing the turning circle, while the hulking SUV rides on air suspension with adaptable spring rates and electronic roll control.
Like the DBX707, the new model has the ability to send 50 per cent of its torque to the front and up to 100 per cent rearward, adjusted constantly for balanced handling.
The acceleration to 100km/h comes in at the same 3.3 seconds the 707 achieves, but the DBX S will get to 200km/h 0.3 seconds quicker, on its way to a top speed of 310km/h – more than enough performance for a ‘family car’.
In keeping with its performance intent, the DBX S scores an aggressive front grille and finessed rear-end, providing an even more menacing presence for what is arguably the best-looking SUV on offer.
Of course, ‘S’ badging is present throughout, from embroidery on the seats to the treadplates and of course the engine plaque.
“Over the last two years, Aston Martin have introduced an entire core collection of next generation sports cars as well as a new DBX; all with a new, entirely bespoke infotainment system designed in-house.,” said Aston Martin chief executive Adrian Hallmark.
“The introduction of DBX S not only reaffirms our commitment to producing the most exciting, rewarding and beautiful cars, it also sends a powerful statement of intent about our ambitions not just for DBX, but for the Aston Martin brand.”
Aston Martin will commence overseas deliveries of the DBX S in Q4 this year, with Australian arrival details yet to be confirmed.
