Chery to add Omoda 9 PHEV from Q3

Mid-sized Chery Omoda 9 PHEV ready to take on established segment players

3 Jun 2025

CHERY Australia is set to expand its SUV line-up from August when it launches the mid-sized Omoda 9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) to Australian showrooms.

Sold in its home market as the Exeed Yaoguang CD-M (pictured), the rakishly styled Omoda 9 will feature seating for five and dimensions comparable with the Mazda CX-60, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and Nissan X-Trail e-Power while also offering the latest PHEV driveline technology from the Chinese OEM.

While full specifications and pricing are yet to be revealed, GoAuto understands the Chery Omoda 9 will feature a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine coupled with a trio of electric motors and a three-speed hybrid transmission.

The combination will provide all-wheel drive and up to 182km (CLTC) of all-electric range – and a combined petrol-electric driving range of up to 1400km.

A DC fast charging time of 20 minutes is quoted against the 30-80 per cent standard while combined cycle fuel consumption is listed at 1.1 litres per 100km.

Power and torque figures have not been confirmed, but regulatory documents suggest a total system figure of 449kW/915Nm – significantly greater than most segment competitors. Six drive modes are available including Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, Sand, and Off-road.

Chery says the figures are sufficient for a 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 200km/h.

The Omoda 9 measures 4775mm in length, 1920mm in width, 1671mm in height and 2800mm in wheelbase and tips the scale at 2270kg (kerb) on 20-inch alloy wheels. Cargo capacity is listed at 660 litres (and up to 1783 litres) alongside “generous” seating accommodation for up to five passengers.

Equipment highlights are likely to include features found in other export markets, including 12.3-inch instrumentation and infotainment screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a panoramic sunroof, powered front seat adjustment, and seat heating and ventilation functions.

The vehicle is also equipped with head restraint-mounted speakers – as part of a 14-speaker Sony branded audio bundle – an in-car fragrance dispenser, passenger side recliner with fold-down ottoman and five-mode massage feature, and no fewer than 32 advanced driver assistance technologies.

Remote connectivity is offered via smartphone as is keyless entry and ignition.

Speaking with GoAuto this week, a Chery Australia spokesperson confirmed the model is slated for arrival in PHEV format only in the third quarter of 2025 and will be the first product to sit under the Omoda brand locally.

Chery announced previously that it will split its Omoda nameplate as a standalone brand and introduce its luxury Jaecoo brand to the Australian market, while at the same time keeping the Chery badge on its core ‘Tiggo’ range.

More information will be available on the Chery Omoda 9 shortly.
