Mercedes-AMG reveals Concept AMG GT XX

Wild all-electric concept offers over 1000kW of power, and a highly emotional design

27 Jun 2025

MERCEDES-AMG has this week unwrapped its wild Concept AMG GT XX, an all-electric, all-wheel drive hypercar it says offers exceptional technology, supreme endurance, hyper-fast charging and a highly emotional design.

The vehicle is said to offer “an impressive insight” into a forthcoming four-door series production model, and features a trio of axial flux motors, a high-performance battery, and an “abundance of technical solutions earmarked for use in the subsequent series-production models” as early as 2026.

“The best minds in our global R&D network have contributed their extensive expertise – from Mercedes‑Benz in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim to Mercedes‑AMG in Affalterbach, and YASA in the UK, to our Formula 1 drivetrain experts at Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth,” explained Mercedes-Benz chief technology officer Markus Schafer.

“Together, they have developed the Concept AMG GT XX and are providing an insight into pioneering drivetrain technology and the future of performance.

“The technology program pushes the boundaries even further and ventures into new ground. The Concept AMG GT XX with its three axial flux motors now lifts performance and endurance to a completely new level.”

Built upon Mercedes-Benz’s AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA), the concept model offers peak power output of over 1000kW and can reach a top speed of more than 360km/h.

Mercedes-AMG engineers say the model’s battery pack remains in an optimal temperature range even during intense driving, enabling not only performance on the road but also extremely fast charging. It is said the model can receive sufficient charge in just five minutes to travel 400km.

The axial motors of the Concept AMG GT XX are more compact, lighter, and more powerful than conventional electric motors, developing higher sustained power outputs and well as higher torque. Mercedes-AMG says this translates into the highest levels of performance, reproduceable again and again with great frequency.

The motors are packaged into two High Performance Electric Drive Units (HP.EDUs) – one at the front and one at the rear. The HP.EDU at the rear has two axial flux motors, each equipped with a compact planetary gearset and one inverter, in a single casing.

The motors and transmissions are oil-cooled and, to save even more space, package the necessary pump control unit with hydraulic pumps and suction filters within the HP.EDU. The two inverters (one per motor) are water-cooled.

At the front, the HP.EDU comprises one axial flux motor, a spur-gear transmission, and an inverter. The front electric drive functions as a booster motor, kicking in only when additional power or traction is required at the front wheels.

“The Concept AMG GT XX is the next milestone in the history of AMG and forges a whole new dimension of performance,” said Mercedes-AMG business unit lead Michael Schiebe.

“We’re bringing groundbreaking technology that redefines high performance. And the best thing is that this car is a true AMG with every fibre of its being.

“The heart of an AMG was always the motor, and that will remain so with our in-house electric architecture. With our high-tech axial flux motor, we’re delivering a revolutionary new drive that is unparalleled in terms of power density, weight and packaging.

“This pairs with a new performance battery developed from scratch that enables previously unimagined level of performance and endurance.”

Meanwhile, the Formula 1-inspired high performance battery pack in the Concept AMG GT XX delivers what Mercedes-AMG says is “high power output with exceptional repeatability”.

With exceptional power density, the unit comprises tall and slim cylindrical cells allowing rapid dissipation of heat to ensure each individual cell is kept within its optimum temperature window.

Mercedes-AMG says the design of each cell facilitates high charging and discharging power, its NCMA (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminium) cathode chemistry and silicon anode offering energy density of 300Wh/kg. In all, there are more than 3000 cells in the Concept AMG GT XX.

Body construction realises a combination of aluminium, steel, and fibre-composite materials to offer “exceptional stiffness” and low weight. The high voltage battery is set between the axles in a skateboard style arrangement, sitting low and central for optimal weight distribution.

The fastback style body shell is said to be representative of the brand’s signature sports car silhouette, while the Sunset Beam Orange paintwork “demonstrates self-confidence”. At the front we find a ten-segment grille flanked by rectangular auxiliary lights, and further outboard vertically arranged main headlights.

The bonnet offers dual air outlets to dissipate warm air from the horizontal cooling modules in the front of the vehicle, while a front splitter extends “far around the front of the car “with an integrated air-curtain function reaching up to the front wheel arches.

In profile, the low-slung coupe sports a long, low DLO, a double-bubble roof, muscular rear haunches, and 21-inch forged aluminium wheels with their own adaptive (Bluetooth controlled) aerodynamic blades.

The wing mirrors are elevated on the doors in sports car fashion, while the sill covers have aerodynamic contours that continue into the rear wheel arches.

At the rear, the diffuser is finished in exposed carbon-fibre that sweeps downward at each side. Mercedes-AMG says it is designed to ensure rear-end stability at high speeds, drawing its form language from the celebrated AMG ONE, and also features an integrated active airbrake.

The steeply angled rear-end is punctuated by six circular tail-lights and central programmable MBUX Fluid Light panel.

Inside, the Concept AMG GT XX offers only the essentials. Upholstery is finished in black, silver, and orange, the cabin offering dual LCD screens for instrumentation and infotainment, a steering wheel reminiscent of the AMG ONE, motorsport style dashboard and door cards, and 3D-printed carbon-fibre seating.

The upholstery and the flooring material is made from 100 per cent recycled materials, and in true motorsport style, there is no headlining. A six-point safety harness is said to underscore the vehicle’s sporty design.

“With the Concept AMG GT XX, we have succeeded in translating our design vision for AMG into the future,” said Mercedes-Benz Group chief design officer Gorden Wagener.

“Sports cars have always been the icons of our brand; they are emotional and truly special to create. They represent unique moments in time. Icons like the 300 SL and the legendary Silver Arrows are the emotional heart of our brand, as are the GT and AMG ONE.

“Crafting these masterpieces is about creating something extraordinary – from the C111 to the Vision One‑Eleven, and into the future of production. The brand-new Concept AMG GT XX, embodies the hot part of our design philosophy of sensual purity.”
