Out front: Subaru steals New York Show

Subaru’s new SUV-shaped Outback debuts in NYC beside Trailseeker, updated Solterra

21 Apr 2025

SUBARU has shown its seventh-generation Outback alongside a new all-electric Trailseeker wagon and facelifted Solterra electric SUV at this week’s New York International Auto Show.

The more SUV-shaped new Outback – a nameplate which celebrated its 30th anniversary at the New York show – is said to incorporate elements of adventures while focusing on accompanying customers in their everyday lives.

Subaru says the model offers significant advancements in design, practicality and infotainment, while refining its driving performance.

Its body styling is a departure from the lifted station wagon look of Outback before it, being taller and boxier to liberate greater interior space, each variant differentiated by a different colour scheme and materials.

Sharing the stage with the Outback in New York – and arguably upstaging the Subaru stalwart – the Trailseeker will enter production next year as the brand’s second battery electric vehicle (BEV) but carries the baton of the Outback’s rugged wagon form factor into a new era with a platform and technology shared with the Solterra that was developed in partnership with Toyota.

The Trailseeker is said to combine driving performance with a high level of utility, sharing the updated Solterra’s revised 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery (with in-built conditioning functionality) that promises a 25 per cent improvement in driving range when compared with the current generation Solterra.

More powerful dual electric motors provide the revised Solterra with 174kW of output in standard format, while the new ‘XT’ flagship will match the Trailseeker’s punchy 280kW, said to be good for a sub-five-second 0-100km/h sprint.

While far from confirming complete Outback specification and equipment details, Subaru indicated model highlights that include a 12.1-inch infotainment array and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the former backed by an “advanced new processor” said to provide “more responsiveness, easier use, and customisability”.

On the practicality side, Subaru says the new Outback will offer buyers more cargo and passenger space.

The 2026 Subaru Outback will also feature “significantly improved” EyeSight safety technologies combining three forward-facing cameras with newly added sensors to offer highlights such as Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection, Pre-Curve Speed Control, Highway Active Lane Change Assist, Highway Automatic Resume Assist, and driver-supported Highway Hands Free Assist.

Under the bonnet, the Subaru Outback will carryover driveline choices from the current model including the turbocharged 2.4-litre and normally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder Boxer petrol engines with continuously variable transmission, and X-Mode all-wheel drive.

By contrast, the Trailseeker is said to deliver more than 420km per charge. It is equipped with “unqiue suspension and all-wheel drive” aimed at delivering what Subaru says is “straight-line stability and control on various surfaces”.

Its exterior visage is of an active, rugged design complementing an interior with “clean, horizontal themes” creating a “comfortable, open design that gives the impression of spaciousness”.

The model is both taller and with larger cargo capacity than the Solterra and is slated to begin production in 2026.

Subaru says the facelifted Solterra that debuted in New York, adds “significant improvements to overall driving performance, battery efficiency and styling”.

The exterior design offers greater aerodynamic performance, new-look LED headlights, and a more “sophisticated” front bumper, while the tailgate is garnished with a larger Subaru logo.

Inside, the Solterra offers what Subaru says is a “more open design” with a “greater sense of comfort” and “horizontal themed dashboard”.

The 2026 Subaru Solterra is expected to be introduced into the North American market later this year. Australian market timing is yet to be announced.
