Toyota set to return iconic FJ Cruiser

INCOMING: The design images hint at a smaller off-road model, potentially named the LandCruiser FJ.

Leaked design patent renderings show Toyota working on smaller FJ Cruiser-style 4x4

6 Jun 2025

TOP GEAR Philippines has discovered World Intellectual Property Organisation renderings that show Toyota is working on a smaller four-wheel drive model that will possibly see the FJ Cruiser nameplate reinstated.

The boxy C-segment vehicle follows Toyota previews that suggest the manufacturer is looking to return a smaller off-road entrant to market, the Japanese giant’s previous Mini Cruiser concept adding fuel to the fire of an inbound FJ Cruiser remake.

Heavily clad, assumedly with body-protecting plastic, and with detailed wing mirrors, tail-lights, headlights, and grille treatment, the latest rendering also appears to show a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

According to reports, the model may wear the LandCrusier FJ nameplate when released in the fourth quarter of 2025, likely making its global debut at the Japan Mobility Show in late October.

GoAuto understands the model will be underpinned by Toyota’s IMV-0 platform that underpins the current Toyota Champ and is also expected to feature beneath the next-generation HiLux and Fortuner.

Assuming that is the case, the likelihood is that the LandCruiser FJ will be powered by familiar turbocharged 2.4- and/or 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engines, as well as the naturally aspirated 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol in selected markets.

To date there has been no confirmation of an electrified or hybridised powertrain option, though with Toyota’s extensive catalogue of new energy drivelines at hand, it is likely a 2.4-litre petrol-electric hybrid option may become available as the engine of choice.

If the LandCruiser FJ is given the go-ahead for Australia, it will compete against a growing number of compact four-wheel drive entrants, including the GWM Tank 300, Jeep Wrangler, and even the five-door Suzuki Jimny.
