New models - Jaecoo - J8 - SHSJaecoo J8 SHS confirmed for AustraliaSeven-seat plug-in hybrid version of J8 large SUV hits Aussie Jaecoo showrooms in Q327 Apr 2026 JAECOO has confirmed a seven-seat, plug-in hybrid version of its J8 large SUV model for Australian arrival in the third quarter of this year.
The new variant will be the first seven-seat model Jaecoo has offered locally since the Chinese importer landed in the Australian market last year with the J7.
Riding on the M3X platform, the J8 SHS shares its underpinnings with its Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid and Omoda 9 SHS corporate cousins.
It also shares their powertrain – specifically in all-wheel drive configuration – which consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine, three electric motors and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.
Local output figures and range specifications are yet to be confirmed for the J8 SHS but the closely related Omoda 9 has a combined system output of 395kW and its 34kWh battery allows for an electric-only driving range of 169km on the NEDC cycle with a claimed total driving range of 1100km.
Australian pricing is also yet to be confirmed but based on the pricing of its plug-in hybrid relatives, J8 SHS pricing could start around the $60,000 mark.
The seven-seat plug-in hybrid J8 variant is poised to sit above the existing five-seat, non-hybrid models in Jaecoo’s J8 line-up, which are priced between $49,990 and $54,990 drive-away.
Meanwhile, Chery Tiggo 9 pricing ranges between $52,990 and $59,990 before on-road costs for the Elite front-wheel drive and Ultimate all-wheel drive models respectively. As for the Omoda 9, the single Virtue AWD variant is priced at $61,990 before on-road costs.
As a new entrant in the plug-in hybrid seven-seater space, the J8 SHS will likely find itself in competition with the likes of the BYD Sealion 8 ($56,990-$70,990 + ORC), the seven-seat Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV model ($66,790 + ORC), and the Mazda CX-80 p50e models ($75,750-$93,419 + ORC) when it goes on sale later this year.
“Our customers have been asking for a 7-seat SUV and we’re more than happy to meet their demands with the compelling J8 SHS,” said Omoda Jaecoo’s Australia chief commercial officer Roy Munoz.
The J8 is not the only Jaecoo model to receive a line-up expansion in 2026.
Jaecoo launched the J5 EV small SUV earlier this year, while its petrol counterpart arrives in showrooms in June. A J5 hybrid is also planned, likely arriving in Australia later this year.
These models join the J7 mid-size SUV and the non-hybrid J8 models, which launched locally last year. ![]() Read more20th of April 2026 ![]() Jaecoo J5 petrol variants pricedPrices for the petrol-powered version of the Jaecoo J5 start from $25,990 driveaway15th of April 2026 ![]() Chery Tiggo 9 Elite to bring sharper pricingCheaper front-wheel drive Elite to join Chery’s flagship SUV line-up, priced from $52,99026th of February 2026 ![]() Jaecoo J5 EV surpasses 1000 ordersFlying start to new electric Jaecoo J5 with over 1000 orders received in first week22nd of August 2025 ![]() 2025 Jaecoo J8 Track ReviewWith great looks and a terrific price, the Jaecoo J8 is let down by just one important factor…All new modelsMotor industry news |
