New models - MG - U9 - black editionMG adds limited-run U9 Black EditionAustralia becomes first global market to launch blacked-out MG U9 dual-cab ute30 Jun 2026 By MATT BROGAN MG MOTOR Australia has added a limited-run Black Edition variant to its U9 ute range, priced from $57,990 driveaway.
Available in dealerships from this week, the U9 Black Edition sits between the Explore X and Explore Pro grades, adding a darker exterior treatment and additional convenience features to the Chinese brand’s diesel dual-cab line-up.
Australia is the first market globally to receive the variant, which MG says was developed in response to demand for a more premium and distinctive version of its newly launched ute.
The Black Edition follows the local introduction of the U9 eight months ago, marking MG’s first entry into Australia’s highly competitive ute segment.
The range now comprises Explore, Explore X, Black Edition, and Explore Pro variants, priced from $52,990 to $60,990 driveaway (see pricing table below).
MG Motor Australia marketing director Dimitri Andreatidis said the new variant reflected changing expectations among Australian ute buyers.
“Since launching the MG U9, we’ve seen strong interest from Australians looking for a ute with a more distinctive look and premium feel,” he said.
“The Black Edition was developed in response to that demand, bringing together the capability customers expect with exclusive styling that gives the vehicle even greater presence on the road.”
The U9 Black Edition is distinguished by blacked-out exterior accents, including the grille, MG badging, wheel caps, and side trim. It also features a stamped tailgate design, blackened headliner, and darkened pillars.
Additional equipment includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and an electric-opening tailgate with integrated drop-down step and cup holders.
MG has also added Towing Cruise Control in response to customer feedback.
The variant retains MG’s turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, matched with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
Towing capacity is rated at 3500kg (braked), while 18-inch all-terrain alloy wheels are standard.
The U9 range also features a locally tuned suspension the brand says is designed to improve comfort without compromising ute capability.
“While capability remains essential, buyers are increasingly looking for vehicles that deliver comfort, technology and safety, designed for everyday life,” added Mr Andreatidis.
“With the MG U9 Black Edition and the upcoming MG U9 EV, we’re expanding our ute offering with different powertrains, features and styling options to give Australian drivers greater choice.”
The U9 Black Edition is available now in limited numbers and is backed by a seven-year warranty when serviced through the MG dealer network.
The MG U9 has failed to attract dual-cab ute customers locally, selling just 796 units in the year to date (or 1.1 per cent of the segment overall).
That figure places the U9 well behind segment leaders like the Ford Ranger (19,074 unit sales YTD) and Toyota HiLux (15,171 units), the model even struggling to match the pace of slower movers like the Kia Tasman (1815 units) and Volkswagen Amarok (1614 units).
