Toyota sets new May sales record

BROKEN RECORD: Toyota beats its own May sales record selling 23,576 new vehicles for the month.

Australia’s best-selling car brand records 23,576 sales in May, almost half hybrids

6 Jun 2025

TOYOTA Australia has set an all-time record for the month of May, selling 23,576 new vehicles.

The best-ever result includes a mix of 45.6 per cent hybrid electric vehicles, alongside strong sales of models including the RAV4 and LandCruiser Prado SUV, and popular HiLux light commercial utility.

The Toyota HiLux was Australia’s number-one selling vehicle in May with 4952 units sold, outperforming rival Ford Ranger by just 191 units. In May, Toyota scored four places on the Australia top 10 sales ladder, the RAV4 managing 4002 unit sales, the LandCruiser 3046, and the LandCrusier Prado 2732.

Speaking on the success of the RAV4, Toyota Australia says the model carried its sales momentum over from 2024 when it sold a record 58,718 units, playing what it describes as an important role in helping it to deliver over 118,000 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) for the calendar year.

Indeed, the continued popularity of Toyota hybrid technology was underscored by HEVs accounting for 10,734 deliveries in May (2025). Toyota Australia says Corolla, Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, and Kluger hybrid models all registered over 1000 units for the month.

Adding the all-electric bZ4X to the tally, and Toyota Australia’s electrified sales share for the month of May totals 46.2 per cent.

Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing, and franchise operations Sean Hanley says the importer’s May performance was its strongest for this calendar year, its combined year-to-date sales of 100,751 units placing it ahead of the 100,398 units recorded at the same point in 2024.

“A monthly sales record is a fantastic achievement by our valued dealers and sales teams, who are coming off a record year in 2024,” he said.

“Toyota is proud to highlight the invaluable connection our extensive dealer network has with their communities and customers.

“This relationship significantly enhances the strength of the Toyota brand, extending well beyond our exceptional product line-up.

“Our competitive advantage lies in our ability to serve customers across the length and breadth of this country, thanks to our dedicated dealer network.

“Importantly, our Toyota dealers are not just points of sale; they are integral parts of their communities, providing personalised service and fostering long-lasting relationships with customers.”
