Future models - BMW - iX3New-gen BMW iX3 prototype testing in FranceRedesigned BMW iX3 is first Neue Klasse model, with 800km range and faster charging13 Jun 2025 AFTER a relatively short four and a half years in production that commenced in China late September 2020, BMW has teased a new-generation iX3 electric medium SUV prototype as it undergoes testing in France featuring the Bavarian brand’s easy-on-the-eye Neue Klasse design language, a new platform and broad suite of upgrades.
It will be the first Neue Klasse model and is due for international launch later this year at the Munich motor show, with production due to commence at the new BMW Group plant in Debrecen (Hungary) starting before the end of 2025.
Australian deliveries will likely start in due course after that date as the iX3 has been one of BMW Australia’s most popular electrified offerings, contributing significantly to the overall X3 tally.
The current iX3 lists here from $91,000 excluding on-road costs but the new generation’s many upgrades and likely sourcing shift from China to Europe will likely mean it costs more.
At the moment, the iX3 competes against the likes of Audi’s Q4 e-tron from $84,900, the Mercedes EQB from $89,100, and Polestar 4 from $78,500 (all excluding on road costs).
The new-generation BMW BEV ups the ante across all areas compared to its predecessor with up to 800km claimed driving range and 400kW recharging capability, promising the potential for 350km of range to be replenished in just 10 minutes.
BMW’s so-called 'Panoramic iDrive' system is an expansive driver information screen and control system designed to show all relevant driving information in the driver’s ideal line of sight, prioritising ergonomic efficiency and safety.
Four elements come together to make a “unique” user experience with the main focus a windscreen-wide, A-pillar to A-pillar head-up display projection.
The set-up runs under the BMW Operating System X software and further integrates iX3’s central display, multi-function steering wheel and (optional) 3D view.
BMW head of Neue Klasse Mike Reichelt described the new BEV’s distinguishing features as "longer range, faster charging, an all-new display and operating concept, and the intelligence of four superbrains”.
“With the upcoming BMW iX3 – the first model of the new car generation – we are introducing fundamental technology upgrades with the clear aim of raising the typical BMW driving pleasure to a whole new level. “With the all-new BMW iX3, we bring our revolutionary technologies into series production for the first time, and we can hardly wait to see it in action on the road. All future BMW models, regardless of powertrain type, will benefit from the innovations and technology clusters of the Neue Klasse.”
The 800-volt Gen 6 powertrain that wil debut in the new iX3 – and being rolled out across other models soon – enables the vehicle to charge faster and drive further (more enjoyably) with the so-called 'Heart of Joy' control computer and the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack “raising the dynamic potential to a new level”. BMW says the system is critical to efficiently running the powertrain, brakes, energy recuperation and sub-functions of the steering system by processing information 10 times faster than previous systems and therefore responding more directly to the driver’s commands while requiring fewer control inputs and keeping directional stability more precise.
It all pivots on a cylindrical battery cell which has an energy density 20 per cent greater that the prismatic cells previously used. The cells are integrated directly into the high-voltage battery pack, which plays an important role in the body structure of Neue Klasse models. BMW says Gen 6 technology enables users to monitor the charging performance and curve live via the My BMW App.
“The high energy content of the high-voltage battery, together with the efficient design of the powertrain and the overall vehicle, enables a range of up to 800km (WLTP) also providing a bi-directional charging function.”
The model features BMW Group’s latest driver assistance systems (ADAS) ushering in the rollout of the next technology generation developed and functioning using AI.
Details of the actual electric powertrain on the new iX3 RWD and AWD are thin on the ground but the latter is speculated to have 300kW/600Nm from its dual motors. The current RWD model available Down Under delivers some 210kW/400Nm with a real-world range of around 400km.
